GENERAL INFORMATION
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It is difficult for me to believe that we are writing our final parent newsletter for the 2007-2008 school year. The time has flown by, but the time spent together has been productive and meaningful. I’m sure you join me in thanking our faculty/staff for an amazing year of “learning.” We want to thank each of our parents/guardians for your support as we partner in your child(ren)’s education. Most importantly, thank you for sharing your incredible boys and girls with us each day!
Classroom assignments for next year will be included on your child(ren)’s final report card. A copy of the 2008-2009 School Calendar is attached to this newsletter. Throughout the summer, someone will be in the school office daily from 9-3, with the exception of July 4th. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have questions.
During the summer months, please continue to encourage your child(ren) to read. Don’t forget to sign up for the Baltimore County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program.
Best wishes to our fifth graders as they enter middle school. For those families that are leaving Sparks (final child in our school or moving), remember that you are always members of our family! Please come back and visit.
Thank you again for an amazing school year. We look forward to seeing everyone in August!
Fondly,
Sharon A. Kearney
A FOND FAREWELL…
Three of our faculty/staff will not be returning in the Fall. Special farewells to…
Ø Mrs. Sheila Guttman, who has taught at Sparks Elementary for 16 years. Mrs. Guttman will retire at the end of this school year, after teaching for a total of 37 years! She has touched the lives of hundreds of Sparks’ boys and girls, and we thank her for her amazing dedication and significant contributions. Best wishes in your retirement!
Ø Ms. Nicole Bowers, who will be relocating to Montana following this school year. Ms. Bowers has been teaching at Sparks for five years. We wish her the very best as she prepares to become a “Mrs.” and establish a new home far from here! Her contributions to Sparks have been greatly appreciated.
Ø Mrs. Nancy Cohen, who has served as an Instructional Assistant at Sparks for three years. Unfortunately, Mrs. Cohen’s position was cut for next year. We appreciate all she has done for the students and faculty/staff at Sparks, and wish her well as she seeks a new position in another school for the coming school year.
“SINK YOUR TEETH INTO A GOOD BOOK-GRAND FINALE”
Please join us on Thursday afternoon at 2:15 for the grand finale of our reading incentive program. Mrs. Fanshaw and Ms. Kearney challenged our boys and girls to read 8,000 books in three months, with the promise of doing something “wild and crazy” if that challenge was met. Well…our students have far surpassed this goal, and the final total of books read will be unveiled at our celebration on Thursday. We have learned about numerous sea creatures (with an emphasis on sharks) during this program, and this theme will be the focus of our grand finale. Thank you to the Reading Academic Team, our VJC Senior Interns, and our committee of parents chaired by Kim Graybill and Robbie Stout who have worked behind the scenes to plan this entire reading incentive program, from inception to grand finale!!! Thank you, also, to our parents for encouraging your children to read and fill in their coupons at home. Thursday promises to be an amazing culmination to our reading incentive program!
THANK YOU, SUN TRUST BANK!
We have enjoyed “banking” right in Sparks’ lobby each Thursday morning with Sun Trust Bank. This has given our boys and girls an excellent opportunity to learn the value of saving money and earning interest. This Thursday, June 5, will be our final day of banking for the school year. We hope you will continue to visit the Hunt Valley Branch of Sun Trust Bank throughout the summer months. Thank you, Sun Trust, for providing this wonderful program for Sparks Elementary. We look forward to banking with you again in the Fall.
ATTENTION FIFTH GRADE PARENTS!!!
Are you a parent of a fifth grader this year? Do you have questions about Hereford Middle School? You are invited to attend a Coffee (or Tea) with HMS Principal, Cathy Walrod, this Wednesday, June 4th, at 9:30am, in their library. This will be your opportunity to ask Mrs. Walrod your “burning” questions as a parent of a new middle school student!
CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER…
At the Baltimore County Public School STEM Fair on Saturday, May 17th, our boys and girls “did Sparks proud!!!” Our Safe Racer Team, “E.C.M.S.C. Racers,” received an honorable mention. The third graders on this team included Emily Endres, Catie May, Max Pflugrad, Sarah Huffman, and Chris Harman. In the Science Fair projects competition, Emily Singer received third place and Lucas Brooks received fourth place. Congratulations to all of our participants!
HAVE AN ENJOYABLE AND SAFE SUMMER!!!
